Belgian Shepherd Puppies
A Proud Shimmer and The "Taos" litter, one hour old.

Shimmer's first birth was effortless - birthing all 8 puppies in 2 hours. With birth weights from 284 to 442 grams, the pups were born hale, hearty and happy with no mishaps. On the 4th day, our vet, Sue Felser, came to our Bed and Breakfast to look over the litter and remove dewclaws.  Parents and pups were wormed at 5 weeks. They loved that banana flavor - a good experience and all is well.

Shimmer, new to motherhood, was a calm, gentle and attentive mom. What follows is the 6 weeks old progress report. (The pups are now three years old.)

At 6 weeks, the pups are being introduced to hard food, raw bones, toys of different shapes, different sounds in volume and type and they are a bodacious, joyful bunch. Happily, no one is scared of the vacuum cleaner!

Cautiously coming out of seclusion, they are being held daily and allowed to run and explore together and as individuals. All seek and enjoy affection. Much of their time is still spent playing, eating and sleeping. Shimmer is still allowing them to nurse and the sight of 8 pups on hind legs is a sight to behold! Playing tug is the newest joy as well as chewing on our ankles and toes!

Fourth week puppy portrait. Gosh, they're cute.

Update : April 8th

They are getting so BIG! Now weighing 6-7 pounds, all have healthy, plush coats and bright eyes. All are starting to assert their individuality and are demanding to go out and explore the world. Blue boy (Regal) and Green boy (Rogue) like to howl and also tussle over the top of the Vari-kennel lid. Pink girl (Rose) has the gentlest temperament (well, right now!) and likes to dig, while grunting, then hide dog bones in the corner of her pen. Silver girl (Diva) ran flawlessly across the strange footing in the fifth week litter test and then that night decided to dominate EVERYONE in the litter. Rainbow girl (Mesa) is simply jolly, loves to explore and play chase with Purple girl. Purple girl (Raina) likes to explore

and was the first to locate the strange noise in the litter test. Gold girl (Maven) is a great problem- solver and the most vocal of the litter. Gold girl (Maven), Purple girl (Raina) and Blue Boy (Regal) are all escape artists. Red girl (Sandia) has great prey drive, has discovered her tail and loves playing with her papa, Ardent. Time is passing too quickly!
